The Greek and Macedonian Art of War Frank Ezra Adcock 9781258335847 Books

First of all Frank Adcock's "The Greek and Macedonian Art of War" IS STILL A GREAT READ. It's a handy little book for the scholar to have on his shelf so I thought I'd buy the hardback copy. What a shame Adcock's great book has been put together so shabbily by Literary Licensing LLC. who obviously have the rights to the book...but no right to inflect such a poor example of the book binding art on the public. The binding is one of those cheap "print to order" types. The pages are made of the cheapest quality paper. You could probably do a better job with expoxy or duct tape. The pages don't even set within the binding in an even manner. All this for $32 plus shipping. LESSON LEARNED: NEVER WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A HARDBACK BY LITERARY LICENSING LLC unless you enjoy shoddy binding at high prices. Fortunately when I looked again I was able to find a used copy in very good condition. I'll pay the premium to get a book thats correctly bound on good paper.I'm sending Literary Licensing paper weight back.

The Greek and Macedonian Art of War Frank Ezra Adcock 9781258335847 Books Reviews

Adcock gives an all-too-brief overview of Hellenic and Hellenistic military art. He begins with the city-state at war and then devotes chapters to infantry and naval matters. Next he turns to the more Hellenistic topics of cavalry, elephants, and siegecraft. He then gives us a chapter on strategy, and concludes with a chapter on generalship. The book was an interesting read, and I got to the last page far too soon.
This book is a little gem. It is the transcription of a series of lessons, each of which covers an aspect of Greek Warfare from the Heroic Age to the Ellenistic Kingdoms. Although short, the book is exhaustive and definitely worth buying for both the military enthusiast and the general reader. The only criticism I might make is that there are no illustrations; this makes it difficult to visualize the chapter on naval warfare. For this reson, the book should be read together with the "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Warfare" by Warry.
Though this book is not nearly as lengthy as many others on the subject of warfare among the ancient Hellenic peoples, it is as fully packed with information, and then some, as other books I’ve read on the subject, and contains many insightful observations ignored by other experts. Part of the reason for its conciseness, impact and scope rests, I think, in the fact that it began as a series of lectures to university students. The author was able to hone his words on the grindstones of students’ heads, achieving a keenness of prose that might have otherwise been missing from the narrative. The author very quickly looks at and disposes of warfare in the Heroic Age, since that was largely a matter of hero vs hero, with limited strategy, few weapons, no cavalry and no use for ships in war except as troop transports, in short everything which was not true of warfare among the Classic Greeks and the later conquering Macedonians. The author more than adequately examines the evolved role of the infantry, chariots, cavalry, long-range weapons such as slings and javelins, but I particularly enjoyed the section on naval warfare. Not only is it a favorite subject of mine, but is an aspect of ancient warfare where the weapon systems become more important that those wielding the weapons, where the motto of the day was innovate or be sunk. Those readers who want to read about warfare among the ancient peoples of the Hellenic Peninsula and yet not have to wade through pages of dense prose will find it well worth their while to track down this little book.
