Still Still Series Book 1 eBook Camilla Monk
***4.5 stars***I picture Camilla Monk having a cackling laugh. She’s an evil genius who likes to mess with her readers. In the Spotless series we have an extremely intelligent heroine who steps up to save the world. She’s matched with an extremely obsessive clean freak who’s also a hired killer. In the Still series we have a high school dropout heroine who is forced to save the world and doesn’t really get a choice whether she wants to or not. Her hero, well, he’s a blind hobo. She can write a whole series and each book is completely different. She can start a new series and it is nothing like the first if anything it’s almost the complete opposite.
I never know what to expect when I pick up a book by Camilla Monk. Her imagination is extraordinary, her humour original and her avoidance of writing sexy times, somewhat of a standing joke. Here’s the amazing part…her books don’t need them. Yes, you read that right, HER BOOKS DON’T NEED SEX IN THEM to be bloody brilliant.
Could you imagine spending your life disappointed in everyone and everything? For Emma, she has a mother who prefers her step-daughter to her own flesh and blood. A weekend father who after six years decided even that was too hard and leaves. A life where if you expect nothing, you’re not surprised when nothing is all you have. She also has a secret that no one can know about that even she doesn't believe.
At 20 years old, completely on her own after cutting ties with her mother and her mother’s new family, Emma decides to track down her dad. She’s hoping for a hallmark moment but is scared that it will be another nothing in her life. Taking a risk, she hops on a plane. Instead of knocking on his door, she comes face to face with her evil step-sister…who’s actually not evil, just everything Emma’s not. Lilly, Emma’s step-sister, is sweet, kind, pretty and intelligent…who wouldn’t hate her?
What follows is something you would have to read to believe. Time stops, faces freeze, magic resurfaces and gods, titans and protectors are all vying for power, control or to save the world. Funny thing is, Emma is at the heart of it. She was destined to be here and it’s her job to help save the world…with a blind hobo.
It’s so hard to explain a Camilla Monk story and the feelings she provokes. I can tell you that I laughed, cried, sighed and smirked. It’s as if time stopped as I read some of the fast-paced, action-packed and brain swirling scenes. Those particular scenes always seem to fly by as I read, and at the end, I sit back, take a deep breath, look around and I’m surprised that the world kept going on around me. That is the magic of Camilla Monk.
A new series and I’m a fan. Still is like nothing I've read before. I didn't expect to be saved by a swearing, disrespectful and unhappy heroine. I'm gobsmacked that I've fallen for a blind hobo who sees better than most. The main characters were easy to fall in love with and the additional characters were interesting and helped the story flow. I loved that I was so surprised with the storyline and I was sad but content with how it ended. I'm still waiting for a sex scene, though...

Still Still Series Book 1 eBook Camilla Monk Reviews
I am a big fan of the author's Spotless series, so I was so excited to hear she was working on something new. Still is a lot different than Spotless, so I was wary going in, but dare I say I liked it MORE than spotless??!?
Emma is a bit of an unlikely heroine. She is rough around the edges and is an outcast in her family. She has a hard armor around her to protect her. You see, she has a secret. One that has plagued her childhood and is the source of countless issues. Emma is consciously witnesses time stopping. People stop in their tracks, birds are still midair, and rain drops hang suspended. This never is permanent, but every time is just as terrifying. Emma will never know if this episode will be the one where time stops forever.
Ostracized by her family, Emma decides to go on an unannounced visit to her father in Rome. However, she finds that her stepsister, Lily, is in Rome on an internship for a very mysterious archeological company. While with Lily, Emma encounters Faust. At first glance, Faust is a blind, drunken hobo. But the more Emma sees him around Rome, she begins to see that there is more to Faust than what she first thought. And perhaps her might be involved with her time stopping episodes.
This book has all of my favorite elements in romance. A base of paranormal, a generous splash of comedy, an underlaying mystery, and a pinch of sexual tension. I'm looking forward to Emma and Faust's adventure in Book 2.
So, after the amazing Spotless-series I was really curious as to what Camilla Monk would come up with next. And wow, I really love it!
Emma is 20 years old and travels to Rome to finally see her dad again after he ghosted her 13 years ago. When she bumps into her stepsister Lily on the first day, she is not happy. Emma's family story is quite sad and I felt so sorry for her and understood why she lashed out at everyone and everything. Part of her difficult childhood is the fact that Emma sometimes feels time stopping. She has no control over it and soon learned to keep this fact to herself.
I won't tell more of the story as it is quite complicated (original!) but also amazing. Who would think a blind bum of the street named Faust would be one of my fave heroes! He is also a cat lover!
I must admit I had some trouble the first chapters to get into the story, and was a bit overwhelmed with all the facts thrown about. But when the story took off, it really took OFF. I am always amused at the crazy and funny things this author offers. And no, the story does not end on a cliffhanger, but it screams for the next!
I was very excited to get my hands on this book. How can you go wrong with an angsty, lonely girl who randomly experiences time stopping all around her and a blind hobo with time-freezing powers?! Add in a healthy dose of Greek mythology and you’ve got yourself a real winner! No, seriously.
I really enjoyed this story. I love all the characters, the sense of humor, the education that’s sneaked in, and everything that makes this story stand out from the cookie-cutter plots that are all-too-common. The plot is so unique and captivating that I couldn’t put the book down. Monk manages to take this crazy premise and make it compelling and entertaining. Emma is a loner with a huge chip on her shoulder and unsure of her place in this world. Faust is…he’s just Faust. He’s so uniquely quirky, entertaining, and unassuming. They’re a great duo but then there are the side characters that enrich the story even more (go, Silvio!). Every character has a real purpose; none are thrown in frivolously.
I don’t feel like I can speak much more about the story for fear of giving too much away. I can say that I really enjoyed the ride and I’m anxious for the next installment. I also teared up briefly at the end, under the wary eyes of my family. It tugged the ol’ heart-strings, folks. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path that is full of history and is well-written, Still is for you.
