A solid mystery, with a lot of originality, but some parts were too obvious. I also felt the book was a bit long, and could have been shortened. I really liked the character of Murray Mackenzie (and his story arc), but didn’t really like Anna, which made it difficult to care about what she was going through. I’m probably being a bit tough, but only because Clare Mackintosh is a better suspense author than most. Definitely a way above average read, that I would recommend to anyone, but not the 5 star rating that her previous books were.

Sure didn't expect those plot twists. I really enjoyed this story and now I feel I need to re read the entire book again.
Loving this book as much or more than Clare's first two books. Can't wait to read more. If you love a twist this writer is the best!
A well-controlled narrative awash in unreliable narrators, teasing red herrings, and a thread of the basic human decency we all hope to encounter in our lives.
This is the second book I read written by Clare Mackintosh, the first being I Let You Go. Both were good stories that kept me interested the whole time I was reAding them. Let Me Lie is about a young woman who is grieving over the loss of her parents and the manner in which each died. On the anniversary of her mother's death, Anna Johnson begins to learn the many details that she could never have imagined about Mom and Dad. I definitely recommend this book.
The premise may seem a bit pedestrian "was it a suicide, or wasn't it", but the characters, the writing as well as the many twists and turns make it a surprisingly fresh and riveting read. Clare Mackintosh is one of the few writers on my "buy as soon as it's out" list.

Oh, and if you're reading and thinking that something doesn't make sense or is not realistic, trust the author - it'll all add up in the end.

Personally, I found this book not as good as her second one (I didn't enjoy being in the head space of the first book's protagonist, even though the twist was brilliant), but still one of the best I've read this year.
I was surprised with the plot at the start of this story. A strange way to begin with the suicide of both parents each following the other with no suspicious circumstances to be found anywhere , until on the anniversary of the wife’s death , a card arrives at the old home of the parents’ now owned by their lovely daughter Anna which reads, “Suicide, think again”?
This leads Anna and her new husband and child along with others left behind to question a near impossible situation concerning the deaths of Anna’s wealthy parents. The only one believing Anna is a retired CID with hope to feel useful again. It was a lost cause to me from the start but McIntosh picked up the pace very fast and before my bedtime was way past late , I had finished another thriller I could not put down. No, readers, I am not going to spoil any of this exciting author’s reads for you. I read good books recommended by good readers. These were suggested to me by CS Duffy, a Scottish Noir writer who is another you need to read too! You must begin to take my honorable word. I do know my mysteries and thrillers. I love them ! I think you will like this one and more by Claire McIntosh who was an ex - forensics DCI for years. She makes it interesting and her stories are all inspired by real cases. Enjoy !

My Thoughts Multiple narrators, including an anonymous one, lead us through Let Me Lie.

I liked trying to decipher the clues that came to Anna in the form of scary messages. Odd events that make her question everything she thought she knew.

Would Anna find the answers to the disturbing events? Would her family secrets be unveiled? What if her past was exposed as a twisted lie?

Murray Mackenzie, the retired detective who worked the case, was an interesting character. I liked how his own personal issues with his mentally ill wife added another layer to the story. He seemed to be a compassionate person, which isn’t necessarily how I see the police. But I liked how he worked, and even how he and his wife Sarah talked about possible scenarios. They felt like a team, and those moments were some of their best.

As the pace sped up, and just when I thought I knew what was happening, unexpected truths were revealed.

Even beyond what I thought was “the end,” another surprise stunned me. I had to read the last line again and again, leaving me with more questions. A 4.5 star read.
